Reflecting on my Pathophysiology assignment

When the assignment brief was set it seemed difficult, yet, I believed after some time researching and attending college lectures it would not be as problematic as I had initially thought. The main reason I found this assignment difficult was the large time gap of three years since completing a critical review.

Due to being out of practice, and in an effort to minimise stress, I decided to plan and schedule the assignment, starting my first draft in early December. I set a rough draft deadline for myself for January. I did meet this deadline, however, I realised I was nowhere near the standard I should have been at and felt somewhat disappointed in myself, wondering how I could have spent so much time on something and not have a good result. This set me back slightly and caused me to look upon the assignment and my work negatively. I found that taking some time away from this piece of work and returning to it with a fresh mindset was exactly what I needed. Mcllroy (2003) states that once an individual has a certain self-perception of themselves they will act according to this belief. I am beginning to realise that I should not become fixated on negativity and, instead, focus on my achievements and abilities.

It is true that different people absorb, process, and recall information differently (Bradford, 2011). I found it beneficial to look up pictures/diagrams and watch videos, helping to simplify different aspects of the assignment. Working voluntarily in a canine veterinary group aided in my approach to the assignment, being able to relate the work to practice made it easier to understand and therefore research. Additionally, I discussed the topic with my colleagues and became aware of different aspects of the injury which I had not previously considered.

Although difficult, I did find this topic interesting. This was aided by the well delivered lectures given by Nick. All lecturers have different styles of teaching (Mcllroy, 2003), I enjoyed the classes and felt comfortable with Nick’s approachable yet informative teaching style.

Completing this assignment has made me realise, even more so, the importance of physiotherapy. I did spend far too much time on this assignment and consequently my anatomy has been pushed aside. With more deadlines piling up and exams coming closer it’s important I be more responsible with my time, switching back and forth between subjects, not only focusing on one (Shah, 1998).
